Today's emergency preparedness tip is about prevention. Take the time to look over the exterior of your home (there's a great resource at https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/wildfire/preparing-homes-for-wildfire) and identify hazards that might put your home at risk. Make a plan to address them. We haven't had many submissions to our challenge drawing yet this week, so if you enter, your chances of winning the fire extinguisher are excellent! Submit a photo of either your 96-hour kit OR your vehicle gas gauge showing your tank is more than half full at https://bcutah.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_06gzmjdkCVRgYCi to be entered into the drawing for Week Two. This week's prize is a fire extinguisher for your home.

Have you heard of Localscapes? It's a simple approach to landscaping that considers Utah's climate. Localscapes classes have been popular along the Wasatch Front and in other parts of the state, and now they are coming to the Brigham City Public Library! Spots are limited for the September 23 class. Find more information and a link to register at https://www.brighamlibrary.org/event/11671965.

We've all seen the images of cars lined up for blocks (or miles) when a community needs to evacuate and EVERYONE tries to fill their gas tanks up at the same time on the way out of town. You'll be miles ahead of the crowd (see what we did there?) if you make it a practice to always keep your gas tank above half full.

Most of us have heard of a 72-hour kit. Basically, you assemble food, water, clothing, and other supplies to last for three days for each person in your home. More recently, recommendations have been revised. Some call for a 96-hour kit, while others just say to get a "disaster supply kit." In any case, it's important to prepare! Here's a great resource from Be Ready Utah that includes a supply list and various guides for preparedness: https://beready.utah.gov/family-preparedness/get-a-kit-family/. Remember when you are assembling or updating your kits to consider special needs for babies and young children, the elderly, and pets, including medications, mobility needs, and comfort. For the Week Two challenge, submit a photo of either your 96-hour kit or your vehicle gas gauge showing your tank is more than half full at https://bcutah.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_06gzmjdkCVRgYCi.

If a fire or other sudden event occurs and it forces you to evacuate your home, it's possible that members of your family will take different routes out of the home and end up separated, not knowing where the others are. Make a plan for reunification. Think about logical and accessible meeting places that are still a reasonable distance from your home. Maybe in front of a neighbor's house two or three doors down, or a nearby park. Be specific about an easy-to-locate landmark (say "this tree" rather than "the park") and practice, especially with younger children. Our Week Two challenge is to show us either your 96-hour kit or your vehicle gas gauge showing your tank is more than half full. Take a photo, then submit it at https://bcutah.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_06gzmjdkCVRgYCi.

Congratulations to Pamela Arndt, our Week One Winner! Week Two is all about fire, and our first tip of the week is to understand your risk for fire or wildfire. There is some assigned reading with today's tip: Read about how to identify and mitigate risks in the home at https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/fire/is-your-home-a-fire-hazard.html. And for the exterior, check out this resource from the National Fire Protection Association: https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/wildfire/preparing-homes-for-wildfire When you understand your own risk, you can take simple steps to mitigate or reduce it. Our Week Two challenge is to show us ONE of these two things: Your 96-hour kit (yep, updated guidelines recommend 96 hours instead of the old 72) OR your vehicle gas gauge showing your tank is more than half full. Take a photo, then submit it at https://bcutah.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_06gzmjdkCVRgYCi.

Please do not drop your children off at the fire station, as we are no longer allowed to have children ride on the fire trucks in the Peach Days parade. This is a requirement from our insurance provider.

Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond what is expected in serving the public? Brigham City Corporation is accepting applications for the Jim Davis Extraordinary Service Award. Annually, the Brigham City Council recognizes a Brigham City employee or citizen that has performed extraordinary service to our community. This award is in memory of the dedication and commitment rendered by Jim Davis as Public Power Director and City Council Member. When Council Member Jim Davis died suddenly from cancer in 2002, the City Council adopted Resolution 02-23 establishing the Jim Davis Extraordinary Public Service Award. To nominate an individual for this award, write a short narrative that includes specific examples of how your nominee has gone above and beyond what is expected in serving the public. Submit your nomination by 5:00 pm on September 27 to Brigham City Corporation, Attn: Mayor’s Office, 20 North Main Street, Brigham City, Utah 84302, or email to dpett@bcutah.gov.

When a large-scale emergency or disaster occurs, Brigham City may need to rely on volunteers to help in the response. One of the organizations available is the Medical Response Corps (MRC), a national network of volunteers dedicated to improving health and safety in the community. Our local network is organized through the health department. Find more information, including how you can volunteer, at https://mrc.brhd.org/. This is a great volunteer opportunity for anyone, but particularly those with a medical, public health, or behavioral health background. Just a few days left to complete this week's challenge and enter the drawing. Sign up for Brigham City's alerts through Everbridge at https://member.everbridge.net/2746446902198312/new. THEN, go to https://bcutah.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5oORqacBxFJdbBY and give us your name and email address. We'll verify that you are signed up and enter you into the weekly drawing. Brigham City’s Peach Days celebration is scheduled to begin September 6, 2024. Signs will be placed along the parade route stating that a specific area is “Closed for Maintenance” which allows for grounds maintenance. Any object or device placed prior to completion of this maintenance will be removed and disposed of by City personnel. Please remember no staking, ropes or rocks will be allowed in the public right of way. Signs will be removed at APPROXIMATELY 3PM on Thursday, September 5. Sidewalk areas must remain unobstructed and clear for pedestrian use. Please be aware that the area between 300 and 400 South, both east and west side of Main Street, will be blocked to public use from Thursday through Saturday, September 5-7. We appreciate the community working with City personnel as we work to make Peach Days a success. Questions may be referred to Brigham City Public Works Administrative Offices at 435-734-6615.

Licensed amateur radio operators (HAMS) have the option of registering their qualifications and equipment with ARES, or the Amateur Radio Emergency Service. ARES has been responding to emergencies and disasters for decades and fills an important role when other communication methods aren't available. In our area, the ARES affiliate is the Golden Spike Amateur Radio Club (GSARC), which offers meetings, trainings, and frequent tests to help operators maintain their skills. Check out their website at https://www.k7ub.org/ and their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057738330200 This week's challenge has two parts. Brigham City will use a variety of communication methods in an emergency. One of those is through our Everbridge notification system, which we use for both emergency and non-emergency notifications. Common questions about Everbridge: * Why do we have to enter our address to sign up? Sometimes we have alerts to send that are dependent on location - if there is a scheduled power outage in your area or if there is a road closure in your neighborhood. Entering your address ensures you receive those. * How can I reduce the number of notifications I get? There are two ways. First, if you quickly respond to the text notification and verify that you've received it, you won't receive the phone call. The second way is to go into your account and change your preferences. Contact Cami Sabin at 435-734-6617 if you want to do this over the phone. This week's challenge is to sign up for Brigham City's alerts through Everbridge. You can choose what type of notifications to receive and how to receive them (pro tip - sign up for email but then choose EITHER text or voice alerts to avoid getting a text and a phone call). Sign up at https://member.everbridge.net/2746446902198312/new. Then go to https://bcutah.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5oORqacBxFJdbBY and give us your name and email address. We'll verify that you are signed up and enter you into the weekly drawing. This week's prize is a collapsible shovel, useful for those automobile emergency kits or to keep with your sanitation supplies. We'll draw the winning name next Monday morning (September 9) and announce it at 8am!
